As you know, the Marcellus Shale, along with its more than 500 trillion cubic feet of clean-burning, domestic, job-creating natural gas, presents a once in a generation economic opportunity for this region of the country and for our nation’s long-term energy security.

Not only does the responsible development of the Marcellus hold the potential to create nearly 212,000 new, good-paying jobs in Pennsylvania alone over the next decade, in addition to the tens of the thousands of jobs that it has already helped create, it also holds the promise – as the second largest natural gas field in the entire world – to help put our nation on a path toward a stronger, more secure, and cleaner energy future.

And while the industry, and region's economy and workforce, have come a long way since the first Marcellus well was completed in 2004, there is much more work ahead. Your engagement will be critical to ensuring that this shale gas revolution is made possible and that our mutual goals of environmental protection, energy security and affordability become a reality.
